Yamazaki Whisky Distillery

Shinjiro Torii of Suntory fame founded the Yamazaki distillery in 1923. The first spirit was made a year later, and today the distillery houses 12 stills of differing styles. Due to the fact there are only two main whisky companies in Japan, there is little trading of whisky, and so all distilleries must be self-sufficient and produce both grain and malt whisky on-site. In 1984, Yamazaki 12 year old was launched, making it the first ever seriously marketed single malt whisky from the country.
