William Grant was a legendary figure in the whisky industry. He lived in the centre of Speyside, and began working at the Mortlach distillery, learning about how to make whisky. Eventually, in 1886, and with the help of his children, he built the Glenfiddich distillery, which began distillation on Christmas day of the following year. Shortly after, Grant acquired Balvenie, and with these two distilleries he worked hard to promote single malt whisky. In fact, Glenfiddich was the first ever distillery to have its single malt officially marketed as such. Today, the William Grant company is the third largest whisky producer in Scotland, with a superb selection of brands.
