The Macallan Whisky Distillery

The Macallan distillery started out life as the Elchies Distillery which was founded by Alexander Reid in 1824. It is located not far from the River Spey, and is nearby a ford which local farmers used to drive cattle across the river. Over the 19th century, the distillery was expanded. In the 20th century, however, it became really big, with its stills doubled to 12 in 1965, with a further six added in 1975, and three more installed in 1975. The reason for this was the increasing demand of Macallan whiskies. Thanks to an excellent wood policy which makes use of superb American bourbon barrels and Spanish sherry casks, Macallan is regularly awarded top prizes by the critics.
