One of the legends in the world of Japanese whisky, the Nikka company was founded by Masataka Taketsuru, who travelled to Scotland in 1918 to learn all about whisky production. He returned to Japan in 1920, and set up his first distillery in 1934, naming in Yoichi. In 1969, the Miyagikyo distillery was built. The Nikka company is one of the two giants of the industry, alongside the Suntory company. Today, Nikka's whisky is critically acclaimed.
