The Glenfiddich distillery was founded by William Grant in 1886, and it is situated in Dufftown at the heart of Speyside. The distillery is one of William Grant's trio of malt distilleries, the other two being Balvenie and Kininvie, though Glenfiddich was in many ways the innovator. After the Second World War, there was a spike in the demand for whisky, and rather than compete with big blended whisky brands, Glenfiddich was released as single malt. In fact, Glenfiddich was the first distillery to market its whisky as such, when it did in 1963. The tactic worked very well, and the distillery has continued to become more and more popular. Today, Glenfiddich is a vast facility, with 43 onsite warehouses, which have a massive capacity of 800,000 casks. Indeed, the distillery itself produces 10 million litres of spirit per year!
